Who actually remits the tax on this booking?
The question is not what the rate is, because your accountant knows that. It is who is responsible when a platform took the money, and that answer changes with your province, your booking source and whether you are registered. No email required and no rate table to go stale.
This booking
Your numbers, never sent anywhere
Your sales tax situation in Quebec is GST + QST. This tool answers who is responsible, not what the rate is. Rates change; responsibility rules do not, which is why there is no rate anywhere in here.
You charge and remit GST + QST
You are making a taxable supply of short-term accommodation, and that does not change because of which website the guest used to find you. The platform rules were written for suppliers who are not registered. Your booking source affects your commission and your accommodation tax, not this.
The platform remits, if it is registered for the tax on lodging
A digital platform registered for Quebec's tax on lodging collects and remits on the bookings it handles. If you also remit on those nights, you are overpaying quietly and permanently, and nobody sends it back.
Whatever the answer, your books have to prove it
- Booking source recorded on the reservation, as a field rather than as something you reconstruct at year end.
- Each tax stored as its own component on the posting. A single tax total cannot be split back apart later, whatever anyone tells you.
- A remittance figure split by who remits: this much you owe, this much an agency owes, this much a platform already handled.
This is a general model of how the rules are shaped, not advice about your filing, and it can be out of date. Confirm your own position with the CRA, with Revenu Québec if you are in Quebec, with your municipality for accommodation tax, and with your accountant.
One email when the next one is ready
We publish a tool or a guide every few weeks, all of it about Canadian small-property operations. No sequence, no drip, no sales email dressed as a newsletter.
The reasoning behind this tool is written out in full: The full guide on who remits.
